About Port
Port wine is a fortified wine made in Oporto, the coastal region of the Douro Valley, in beautiful Portugal. It is produced from a blend of grapes, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca. Port is fortified with brandy, which stops the fermentation process, leaving residual sugar and high alcohol content, usually between 17- 20% alcohol by volume. Port comes in a variety of styles, including ruby, tawny, and vintage, each with its own unique flavors and aging process. Ruby Port is young and fruity, with notes of blackberries, plums, and a hint of spices. Tawny Port is aged in oak barrels for as much as 10, 20, or 30 years, developing a nutty, caramel flavor. A declared Vintage Port is made from the best grapes of a single vintage from a specific year and is aged for up to a decade in the bottle before being released. Port is best served at room temperature and is a perfect match for strong cheeses, nuts, dried fruits, or decadent desserts. Port, along with cognac is often enjoyed as an after-dinner drink.
