Wine Spectator's #7 of the 100 Top Wines from 2023
Lushly fruited, this sends waves of crushed plum, boysenberry compote and blackberry paste out from the core, with a strong undercurrent of cast iron and smoldering tobacco to boot. Grippy and dense, but with a sense of polish and a note of purity in the guise of a pretty violet echo. Best from 2025 through 2040. Wine Spectator 96/100 points
The Vaca and Mayacamas mountains that border Napa Valley produce some of the region's most distinctive wines, with Dunn Vineyards being a prime example. Randy Dunn began his winemaking career in 1975 at Caymus and established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain in 1979, an area then considered remote for viticulture. His foresight paid off. His son Mike, who joined in 1999, now manages the winemaking. Randy still decides the harvest dates for their 40-acre Howell Mountain estate. Dunn Cabernet is known for its longevity and excellence. After aging for 32 months, the wine emerges densely fruited with firm tannins, yet remains polished and pure.
