Opus One is a joint venture between the late Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux. From the onset, Opus One was conceived as a Bordeaux-style blend based on premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, thereby merging French and American winemaking styles into a singular opus. After its debut in 1979, Opus One quickly rose to cult status, and to this day it remains one of the most sought-after wines produced in the United States, as evidenced by the 2016 release which received 99 points from leading critic James Suckling:
99 Points James Suckling “Fantastic aromas that are complex and complete with blackcurrants, blueberries, and herbs, such as basil and bay leaf. But always subtle. Full-bodied yet linear and very refined with a very persistent finish. It shows drive and brightness. So refined at the end. Needs at least three to five years to come together.” (02/2019)
