The Bera family has been growing grapes in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy for over a century, and in the 1970s, they were among the first to release a sweet red wine made from the ancient Brachetto grape. Now wildly popular among sweet wine enthusiasts, Bera’s Piemonte Brachetto 2016 is made in the “frizzante” or semi-sparkling style with high residual sugar, correspondingly low alcohol, and vibrant acidity that provides balance.
In the glass, Piemonte Brachetto 2016 shows classic aromas of ripe red cherries and strawberries, and on the palate, it is an Italian sweet red wine with a slight spritz. Brachetto is the red wine equivalent of Moscato d’Asti and can be used similarly at the table with a variety of desserts. In particular, Brachetto’s rich red fruit profile makes it a perfect match with chocolate, a notoriously difficult food to pair with wine.
